Default Will a lawywer take my case after I go to mediation court or should I get one before?

I am deploying to Iraq my son's father has been a dead beat for a whole year that our son has been alive. After all that I got served with child support and child custody paper work. I went to go see a lawyer today and their services will cost me 3 grand. But if we come to an agreement at mediation court I won't need a lawyer. But can I get one after that point? Would that be a smarter option? ------
