How do I dispose of lead paint?

Our storage shed has lead paint on it. Soon we will scrape it and repaint. I was told that I need to wet the paint before scraping and put plastic down to catch the paint. So, once I have plastic sheets full of wet lead paint...What do I do with it? It's not right to just throw it in the trash, is it?Any other tips you have about this procedure would be appreciated. Call someone at your landfill or city official or even a painting business and ask them what your local requirements are for disposing it. Where I live, the city has a specific place/building to take your paint to dispose of it. Not sure where you are from... but I bet your city prob has the same thing.Oh ya, to answer your question about throwing it in the trash... NO it is not ok to just throw it in the trash when it is considered a HAZARDOUS MATERIAL. It may be easier to chuck it in the trash, but it best to dispose of it the proper way. Someday our"easy way out"actions with really be screwing up life for our kids and grandkids... ------

Are you sure it's lead? Lead paint has been illegal since the 70's. I'd make sure it's lead before you hire someone to remove it. It is a very hazardous thing, and proper procedures HAVE to be followed. It's going to be costly. Test it, unless you already have. Test kits are readily available in all hardware stores. Cheap, compared to abatement cost. ------
