Americans spend billions on funerals every year, but the funeral or funeral services do not need to be high-priced. A funeral could be a easy internment or an intricate affair with music, speakers, customized cases and refreshments for mourners. Family, spiritual or personal choices are important, but cost and convenience should be thought to be as well.
"Many families are made to make choices about funerals under stress," recounted Michelle L. Corey, BBB President and Ceo. "By training themselves about the process and taking time to raise questions and compare costs, families can avoid overspending. They're likelier to get the sort of service they want, too."
The Fed Trade Commission's Funeral Rule gives consumers several rights, including the inherent right to receive written price lists, illustrations of graveyard or legal requirements and the choice of using a container other than a casket for cremation. Some cemeteries have their own needs, which must be explained completely prior to making a purchase.
