Americans spend billions on funerals every year, but the funeral or burial services do not have to be pricey. A funeral can be a straightforward internment or an elaborate affair with music, speakers, customized boxes and refreshments for mourners. Family, religious or personal preferences are important, but cost and convenience should be regarded as well.
"Many families are compelled to make choices about funerals under stress," announced Michelle L. Corey, BBB President and General Manager. "By teaching themselves about the method and taking time to raise questions and compare costs, families can avoid overspending. They are more certain to get the sort of service they need, too."
The Federal Trade Commission's Funeral Rule gives consumers a number of rights, including the right to receive written price lists, illustrations of graveyard or legal requirements and the choice of using a container aside from a casket for cremation. Some cemeteries have their own wants, which should be explained fully prior to making a purchase.
