Default How to Install a Keyboard on an HP Laptop

When a HP Laptop Keyboard error occurs, sometimes simply a new driver download can remedy the problem. However, not all problems can be corrected this way, and a keyboard replacement for a laptop may be necessary. Fortunately, this is not an overly complex process on an HP laptop, and it can be done with a couple of screwdrivers and about a half hour of time.

* 1

Flip over the HP laptop and locate the RAM section, which is covered by a black cover. This section is in the bottom center of the back of the machine. Use your Phillips-head screwdriver and remove the two screws securing this cover. Remove the cover.
* 2

Remove the HP laptop battery. This is an important step for your own safety. This battery is located at the back of the unit and at the top of the back. The outline of the battery can be clearly seen and can be removed by using the sliding mechanism just below the battery.
* 3

Use your Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the rest of the keyboard-related screws on the back of the laptop. There are three silver screws and five black screws to take out. The three silver screws each have a HP Laptop Keyboard icon printed next to them. The other five screws are aligned at the top of the laptop back and beneath the battery.
* 4

Use a flathead screwdriver to pop up the keyboard shield. Wiggle it under each side of the shield and carefully pop it up. The shield is located at the top of the front of the laptop (just above the keyboard itself). Place it aside and out of the way, since this shield can be easily damaged or warped after it is removed.
* 5

Pull up on the HP Laptop Keyboard carefully and slowly. Do not pull all the way; otherwise, you may damage the cable underneath. There is a keyboard cable holding the keyboard in place. De-attach it from the unit by locating the connector beneath the keyboard. Flip the connector lock into the up position and disconnect the cable. Remove the keyboard.
* 6

Take the new keyboard and attach the keyboard cable to the connector, and push the connector down. Slide the new keyboard in. Replace the HP Laptop Keyboard shield.
* 7

Flip the HP laptop back over. Replace the set of five black plastic screws, and then the three silver screws. Replace the RAM cover.
