North Americans spend billions on funerals every year, but the funeral or burial services do not have to be costly. A funeral could be a straightforward internment or a complicated affair with music, speakers, customised cases and refreshments for mourners. Family, spiritual or personal tastes are important, but cost and convenience should be thought to be as well.
"Many families are compelled to make calls about funerals under stress," recounted Michelle L. Corey, BBB President and General Manager. "By teaching themselves about the method and taking time to pose questions and compare costs, families can avoid overspending. They're likelier to get the type of service they need, too."
The Federal Trade Commission's Funeral Rule gives buyers a number of rights, including the prerogative to receive written price lists, illustrations of cemetery or legal requirements and the choice of using a container other than a box for cremation. Some cemeteries have their own needs, which must always be explained fully before you make a purchase.
