Vaseline has been around for ever, which is a trade name, petroleum jelly is the generic...Other things probably are not identical per proportions. Also, Patents are only good for a limited number of years, 7 I think and renewable once for another 7. I could be wrong but it is somewhere in there ( not to be confused with copyright).I don't think you can get a patent on the way something looks unless it is integral to the function of the device.
